North-West Relief Road

The Northampton North-West Relief Road links the A428 Harlestone Road with the A5199 Welford Road to serve the housing growth west and north of Northampton and to ease traffic congestion with the construction of an additional bridge crossing the River Nene valley.

Following previous successful projects undertaken with the BB team on the Moulton Bypass Phases 1 & 2, B. Line Plant Limited were awarded the drainage and infrastructure works together with the installation of the PCC Culverts and associated Wing Walls.

B. Line worked closely with the BB site team to re-programme the drainage works to ensure productivity was maintained in line with the project earthworks strategy of surcharge/settlement of the embankments built within the river flood plain.

The location of the site in the river flood plain with close proximity to the River Nene meant the works were subject to fluctuating ground water issues. Careful planning of works and consideration of site logistics were necessary to make sure works could be completed throughout the year to maintain progress and keep the project on programme.

On the Brampton Lane Roundabout / Northampton Road tie- in to the existing road network there were issues with existing services, many of which were uncharted, which required careful excavation which was carried out using our own VAC-EX machine. We liaised with the BB site team to re-design the drainage in this section of the works adding practical advice on buildability and temporary works requirements.
